Social Civic Activism Challenges And Suggestions

Between the AUC Administration duty to “support and encourage civic engagement” and the lack of trust

Can “AUC” support the digital exposure of civic and social active groups at AUC?

There is a general sentiment among AUC students that the administration does not value the opinion of the students very much; there are several instances where even sentiments of animosity have risen as a result of the administration’s lack of consideration to the will and the interest of the students. The latest demonstration of these sentiments was reflected in the student action in bringing down the gate of the HUSS building. Other instances have also taken place which are a reflection of the student activism in regard to issues relating to the policies of AUC, which can be seen at “Campus policy Issues” section of the Social Issues page of our wiki.
As a result of the not so positive relationship between the administration of AUC and its students, some clubs refuse the cooperation of any “AUC Administration” interference with their affairs. Ms. Omar, the Vice President of HelpClub when asked about her opinion of whether the university should support their club with providing technical trainings about digital publication, she said , we want no “interference” from the university; our club can handle that. As has been found and analyzed in Help’s case, the club is not possibly making the best use possible out of the potential that the digital provide to the development of their civic engagement message.
Since digital aid is general a new phenomenon, that is growing each day in a dynamic way, AUC civic engagement and social activism clubs need the support of the professionals to make the best possible use of this domain. This is the case especially that most clubs use relatively low maintenance-free versions of the digital software, as has been reported by VIA and Helpclub.
To answer to this gap between the AUC administration and the need of civic engagement clubs for digital exposure, the following suggestions could be tried out as means by which the university could fulfill its obligations to support civic and social engagement, and, at the same time, not interfere as an administrative body in the affairs of the students, since there currently is a lack of trust among these two bodies.
First of all, the administrative body could call upon the divisions working with the digital and publicity at AUC to hold some sorts of workshops to expose the different development groups of the potentials that the digital could present to the spread and success of their mission. Perhaps this can be done through coordination between the office of student development and the “the school of mass communication” and/or with support of the Uact offices.
Similarly, the Office of Students Development, the office at the university that is primarily concerned with eh student activities, in terms of finance, logistical, and organizational support, could uphold some sort of annual seminar at which different social development and civic engagement clubs at AUC should share their best practices and success stories. In such settings, if the Digital was one manner of success, clubs would certainly be attracted in learning about its best usage of their own, instead of feeling that it is imposed on them by the “university”, as has possibly be inferred from the response of Help Club Vice President to issues regarding the university support of the digital use of activist clubs.
